Business Card Holders

Business Card Holders

Hi all! I've not mentioned this before but for about 5 years I have been a member of a blacksmith mailing group called "The Forge". I was quite active in the beginning asking a lot of questions and on the rare occasion providing a suggestion to someone else’s question.. but for the longest time I have been a silent observer following the lives, stories and technical advice of dozens of blacksmiths from all around the world. Anyway I thought it time, now that I have my forge up and running, to jump back in and enjoy the conversations in this email group. A couple of days ago I posted a small message in this group to announce my return and to inform that my forge was up and running. In the post I listed the links to our shop in etsy my blog at wombat forge and our Red Haven Studios blog at RHS . Very quickly I received a couple of replies. A short note to welcome be back from one member and a slightly longer message from Rob Fertner. Now I mention this because Rob quite nicely spent time investigating the links I posted and had noticed my simple wood and wrought iron business card holders. He then kindly sent a design that had been posted in The Forge’s news letter (see image below)

As you can see it is a simple design using angle iron and even easier to make. I found some scrap left over from the old bed I used to build my hood for the forge. Rusty full of bolts and holes as you can see…

But with a little TLC they came up a treat.

As per design I cut into the angle iron.. this inspired me to design a lamp using similar material with the same sort of cuts in it. I can see a lit candle in the middle of two pieces of angle.. I will have to follow that up later.

Not willing to fire up the forge for such a small job I used the oxy/acetylene torch to heat the metal for shaping. The first piece I blackened using Stockholm Tar and the following two brushed and polished. Who would have thought that these wonderful looking business card holders once started their life as turn of the century (1900’s) old iron bed?

and with the cards in them...

So I thank Rob for providing me with the design of such an interesting project and I will leave you all now until the next blog.

Cheers Wombat

I'm amazed, I have to admit. Seldom do I come across a blog that's both educative and
engaging, and without a doubt, you have hit the nail on the head.
The issue is something which too few people are
speaking intelligently about. I am very happy that I stumbled across this in my
hunt for something regarding this.
